EZEKIEL CAMPBELL ANCESTORS
Augusta Co., VA and Cocke/Greene/Jefferson Co. TN

Rev. Dr. Doug Showalter -- dougshow@meganet.net

Generation 7:
I am seeking information on EZEKIEL CAMPBELL who was born about 1794 in TN. He married JANE MODRELL on 18 March 1816 in Pulaski Co., KY. Jane was the child of GEORGE MODRELL and NANCY PAGE.

Ezekiel and his wife lived in TN, then returned to KY. By 1830/31 Ezekiel was in Owen Co., IN, then by 1840 to McDonough Co., IL, then to Andrew Co., MO where Ezekiel and Jane died on 19 October 1861 and 29 Jan 1869, respectively. They are buried at High Prairie Cemetery, associated with High Prairie Baptist Church, west of Cosby. Ezekiel's gravestone gives his age as 61 yrs. 9 mo. 22 ds.--likely incorrect based on earlier tax and census records. Ezekiel Campbell and son Andrew H. Campbell are listed as early settlers of Rochester and Monroe Townships of Andrew Co., MO.

Generation 8:
Ezekiel Campbell was very likely the son of JAMES CAMPBELL [b: abt 1772] and HANNAH INMAN [b: 1774] who were married 23/28 Jan 1792 in Greene Co., TN. James and Hanna were said to be "of Burke Co., NC" in LDS records. Hannah was the daughter of Shadrach Inman and Mary Jane McPheeters.
Ezekiel named his first son James Marion, and his first daughter Hannah. Also, Hanna Inman had a grandfather named Ezekiel Inman, and a brother by that name.

The children of James and Hannah Campbell are said to have been:
--JAMES CAMPBELL
--EZEKIEL CAMPBELL [b: abt 1794]--m: Jane Modrell
--DAVID CAMPBELL
--DANIEL CAMPBELL--m: Susannah Goings [Goens] 2 Sept 1819 in Jefferson Co., TN. Daniel and Susannah are said to have been born on the same day and hour. They came to Sangamon Co., IL about 1828, then moved on to Tennessee Twp in McDonough Co., IL. Daniel was elected Sheriff in 1836--the second one in the county. The family moved to Macomb Twp in McDonough Co., IL. Daniel died in 1842 on his way home from a trip south. Daniel and Susannah are said to have had the following children:
--------Daniel Wilse Campbell [b: 28 Aug 1826 in Jefferson Co., TN; d: 27 May 1914, presumably in McDonough Co., IL]--m: Adeline Jackson in 1854, who died in 1864 in Colchester, McDonough Co., IL.
--------Shadrack Campbell--likely m (1): Elizabeth Rice on 28 Dec 1847 in McDonough Co., IL and likely m: (2) Sarah Ann Watts on 27 Jan 1853 in McDonough Co., IL. The 1914 obituary of brother Daniel, notes that Shadrick was in MO.
--------James Campbell--noted in 1914 obituary of Daniel, as living in Huntsville, MO.
--------[female] Campbell--m: Tolbert Jaggard. Noted in 1914 obituary of Daniel, as having lived in Macomb Twp, and buried in Mt. Auburn Cemeter in Colchester--both in McDonough Co.
--MARY H. CAMPBELL [b: 1794, d: 1878]--m: James L. Clarkson.
--ANDREW CAMPBELL [b: abt 1794/96]. Andrew is the only child of his daughter Hannah and her husband James Campbell listed in his grandfather Shadrach Inman's Will of 24 July 1827 in Jefferson Co., TN, [codicil dated 20 Sept 1830]:
"Item 3: To my grandson, Andrew Campbell, son of James Campbell and Hannah his wife, I give and devise the tract of land on which James Campbell now lives, supposed to contain 100 acres more or less, in trust for the use and benefit of said Hannah Campbell and her heirs forever."
Andrew joined St. Paul's Presbyterian Church [now in Hamblen Co., TN] in 1827, but was removed from that roll on 21 Sept 1827. Quite possibly, Andrew and wife Jane Buchanan had the following son:
--------Andrew W. Campbell [b: 1820, Cocke Co., TN; d: 12 Dec 1896]--m: Sarah Shiflet [b: 1819 or before, Cocke Co., TN; d: 10 Nov 1840] on 10 Nov 1840.
--SHADRACK J. CAMPBELL--m: Amelia Bragg and went to Sangamon Co., IL. He is listed from that county as one who fought in Illinois' Blackhawk War of 1831-32. Shadrack and Amelia are buried in Sangamon Co., IL. The are said to have had a child:
--------James M. Campbell

ANDREW CAMPBELL [b: 1739 or before, Augusta Co., VA]--m: Mary Henderson [b: 1743 or before, Augusta Co., VA] [most likely a relative of Andrew's mother].
